Greetings from Stuart Walker
Epsom Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Morning sunAnother week and what a lovely week it's been. The sun has been shining and the golf course is looking superb, I know we have just had some essential work done on the greens but the rest of course is looking as lush and green as I've ever seen it. So no excuses not to get yourselves out there and experience some of the beautiful mornings we've had up here lately.

Competition news

This week's results...

So what's been happening in the last couple of weeks, well in the men's competitions Adam Crockford took the beautiful PING Salver with a superb 39 points, shooting a very impressive 75 off his handicap of nine.

We've also just had the mixed Geen Salver, which was played last Sunday on a glorious sunny day. This is one of two Geen Salvers, this time it was the gents turn to invite the ladies. I am very happy to say that everyone was still talking to each other at the end and the Prosecco bottles were popping throughout the day. The winners this time with a cracking 40 points were the pair of Geoff Collins and returning member Jean Kenny, a fantastic round and a fantastic afternoon on the terrace.

Junior Golf

JuniorJunior golf is really on the rise again at the club and it's continual success will be always helped by afternoons like the one we have just held last Sunday. We are very lucky at the club that we have such generous members giving both their time and their support to the junior section at the club. We in the pro shop coach the young upcoming stars but it is the work of many of the members and parents who help to put on and assist with the events. So on Sunday we had a competition for the 'big boys' but we also held a competition for the 'little ones' who have come through the Passport Coaching Programme and are now taking full advantage of the free year's membership that has been very generously given by the club. Through the hard work of Past Captain Roy Chegwin, we held an eight hole comp for future Jordan Spieths. It was some of the kids first time out on the course in any sort of competition and they all did really well and judging by the smiles at the presentation, thoroughly enjoyed themselves in the process. It was great to also see all the parents up enjoying the afternoon's golf and a sneaky Pimms on the terrace. I know it's a cliche, but they really were all winners and it was great that Roy made sure everyone picked up something and got a clap at the presentation. It was a great afternoon and I know we have a few young superstars coming through and I know that this is the first of many great junior days back at the club.

Pictured above is the Captain with his winning 'little boy', Joe Filbin, winner of the Kestrel Cup.

The winners of the eight hole comp with Roy Chegwin and Phil Hughes, who very generously provided many of the prizes. So a huge thank you to all who helped organise the event and if you have a child or grandchild who you feel would like to get involved in golf, either coaching or playing at the club then please contact myself or Roy Chegwin.

Let's get the numbers up!

I know that a lot of you have been away sunning yourselves lately but I have noticed over the past few months that numbers, especially in the Men's Sunday Competitions, have been dropping a little. So I would like to have a little push to get them all up again, so this week we have the monthly medal and if you haven't got your name down then you can simply either email me here or call the shop and I will come back to you with your tee time. We also have the Steinthorrsen Pairs coming up but if you haven't got a partner again let me know and I can pair you up, I'm like the golfing match.com. Talking of pairs events, I can't believe that already I have the first round of the winter league coming up, but again if partners are needed just let me know.

Finally, we have two events that everyone can play in. Firstly, both the Captains have joined forces and are hosting their Charity Day on Thursday, 15 October, it's teams of four and is a real fun event followed by some great grub and at the same time raising money for a very worth wile cause. Tadworth Court Children's Hospital court is this year's joint Captains' chosen charity, so get your names down for a super day.

Secondly, I have a 'Pro shop Scramble' coming up. Again a four man/lady event, Texas scramble shotgun competition which also includes a buffet breakfast before you play,( I'm sure we could also throw in a few bottles of Prosecco to wash down your brekkie). Also in this particular comp you are invited, if you wish, to bring a guest to sample the great Sundays that we have at the club. Ladies, gents, juniors all are very welcome. If you would like any further information on any off the events I have mentioned please call or email the pro shop.

Take the Heaven Wood Challenge!!

After the huge success of the return of the Callaway Heaven Wood I would like challenge all our members to come and try the wonder club against your own existing 3 and 5 woods.

The secret of the Heaven Woods success is simply that the head has the loft of a 7-wood with the shaft the length of a 4 wood, giving you the height and control from the loft and carry and distance from the length of the shaft.

Traditionally fairway woods are the most difficult club in the bag to hit but the Heaven Wood changes all that.

So my challenge is to you, is to book a session in the simulator and see if I can improve your numbers in carry, distance and control. Plus as a little incentive, everyone who tries out the Heaven Wood receives a free sleeve of Callaway balls.

Call the Pro shop on 01372 741867 to book your 'Heaven Wood Challenge'.

Coaching news

The Winter Coaching Programme.

Over the Winter is the perfect time to look at your game and set some achievable goals for the following season, so I would like to offer the opportunity to have an sit down for a coffee and discuss what you feel your strengths and weaknesses are, find out where you would like to be and then set some achievable goals for the new season. We can then work towards these goals through the following programme.

Coaching Programme:

Session one: Video analysis to make clear where faults lie and discuss how to make changes as well as work on simulator to look at current distances irons are hit to give comparison later in programme.
Session two: Range work focusing on set up and fault fixing from session one.
Session three: Repeat of session two
Session four: Short game - to include pitching, chipping and distance control.
Session five: Long game - Driving distance, accuracy and fairway woods.
Session six: Putting

90 minute playing session to apply new improved techniques to the golf course, whilst looking at decision making, club selection and course management.

Gapping session on the simulator to discover new distances and give vital information for club selection. After every session the pupil will be given information notes containing practice drill to work on until the next session, with email back up on any issues throughout the programme.

Cost for Programme: Two options of the programme are available (both will include 90 min course session):

30min sessions programme: £215
60min sessions programme: £315

If you would like more information on this or any other available programmes please either click here, call or simply pop in to the pro shop for a chat.
