Mens' Club Championship

Well Men's Club Championship weekend delivered on all its normal excitement and drama as always. I arrived at the Club at 6.30am on Saturday morning to a wet, murky morning but this didn't deter any of our 85 man field full of expectation and hope of lifting one of the coveted trophies on Sunday afternoon.

Thankfully as the morning went on the weather improved and then rumours began bounding around the course of great scores being carded. I have to say at this point that despite some challenges running up to the event Mark the Head Greenkeeper and his team of Craig and Andy had the course looking lovely, the greens had quickened up and it was all lending itself to some great scores being delivered. Well done boys!

After the first round there were plenty of golfers in the red managing to beat their handicaps but way out in front was Ben Northeast with a staggering nett 63 playing off a 7 handicap, which also put him only one off the pace in the gross competition. 70 was a fantastic score from Ben but he was just pipped to the overnight lead in the gross event by young Elliott Wood who carded a very impressive gross 69 playing off 3.

So all to play for going into Sunday's round and what a day it was, the sun was shining bright from the off as all headed out chasing the glory. As is tradition the lowest handicapper tee off last adding to the drama as they all eventually find their way down the 18th hole. Early leaders in the scratch event were Cameron Morris posting an 8 other benchmark with two very steady 74's. The shop's very own Tom Hanley then pushed himself to the top of the leader board with a fine 73 after a great 71 on Saturday giving 3 over to beat. So as the final group headed down the last the message from the course was that there was only one shot between Alex Inns and Elliot Wood to take the title.

Elliot put his approach through the back but then proceeded to play one of the best up and downs I've seen under the pressure and this left Alex with a 12 foot put to force a play-off. The put came up a few inches short and the Brookes Cup went to Elliot Wood but huge praise to Alex Inns who shot a gross 67 to get himself right back into contention, I know Alex's turn will come.

However massive congratulations to Elliot Wood who takes the title for a second time and it was also great to see three generations of the Wood family playing over the weekend and watching on proudly.

Rosebery Medal

So the Rosebery medal still had to be decided, who could catch Bens 63? And could Ben keep his nose out in front, unfortunately not. Ben had a slightly disappointing Sunday round and I'm sure Ben won't mind me saying that it may have been something to do with his celebrations of Saturdays round. Richard Egan, a man with an ever decreasing handicap posted a fantastic net 65 only to be overtaken by Ton Hanley again with a net total for the weekend of 134, minus six.

However striding down the 18th full of confidence came that man Gerry Dunn, he had carded a very steady net 69 on Saturday but then smashed that with a superb net 65 to just edge Tom out on countback for the historic Rosebery Medal.

Congratulations to Gerry for a great weekend's golf and thank you for the mention in the speech as we had had a couple of lessons together running up to the Championships.

Sorry, shameless plug but had to get it in there.

So with two Champions crowned on the 18th green the celebrations started with the now mandatory 150 yard nearest the pin challenge, 40 strong headed up the 18th fairway and as predicted a couple of beers had some negative but hilarious effect on a few of our golfers. However, out runner up Alex Inns stuck it to about a foot to take the pot which he handed straight over to the Captains charity, well done Alex.

A great weekend and now we look forward to another huge weekend of the Pro Am and the 54 a-side 125th Anniversary Match over at Banstead Downs GC.

Pro Am 2015

Just a very quick reminder that the course will be closed on Friday for Pro Am preps but also if any of you would like to play I have had one team pull out so if three of you fancy a great day at the Club please let me know. Also we are still in need of some ball spotters, so if you can help out on Saturady please let me know, we will supply you with lunch as a thank you.
