Greetings from Stuart Walker | Epsom Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional |
Competition News
Now I know I keep starting with 'wow what a weekend' but something continually keeps popping up out of the ordinary to report on. We've had course records and now we've had a 'Hole in One' but not any straight forward hole in on, this particular ace was made on our 'Par 4' 4th hole. Hole in ones are rare enough but to make one on a par four is unheard off, so please take a bow Mr Paul Harris. An incredible shot that topped off a fantastic nett 63 round to easily win Sunday's Division One Medal. A wonderful day for Paul who rang the bell and generously bought all 75 of Sunday's competitors a drink.
Division Two was won on countback by Mike Hunter with a very good nett 68, may have been something to do with the lesson Mike had in the week. Lesson programmes available on request, sorry for the shameless plug there! Now I seem to remember tipping someone for future success in last week's email but even I didn't expect two weeks in a row but it was that man again, Richard Egan who took Division Three with a nett 67 and dropped his handicap again another shot. Well played gentleman, some great golf.
We also on Sunday had the presentation of the Alexander Rosebowl Knockout that started way back in the winter, the winner this year was Cameron Morris who beat the pro shop's very own Tom Hanley (last year's winner, sorry Tom asked me to put that in) in the Final. This is one of the major trophies and one of the toughest to win so congratulations to Cam for some great golf throughout the year.
Summer League
Although we have not had a Summer League this week, it is back twice more next week and the following week. BBQ is the on the menu for next week so again if you would like to play please see the signup sheet on the men's competition board.
Competition News
This week's ladies event was a straight forward stableford but I am particularly pleased to announce Rosemary Campbell as the winner with a superb 44 points. I have a long history with Rosemary's swing, it goes back over ten years, now to say that I may have repeated myself a couple time maybe the understatement of the year but I always knew that this round was in there trying to get out. Great round Rosemary!
Elsewhere in the ladies section I wanted to make a special mention to Debbie Gills and Sue Becksmith who qualified for the regional final of the Coronation Foursomes and managed to finish in the top ten in a huge field just a couple of shots off the top. Great way to represent the Club ladies.
The Junior Open
Thursday saw a great day with juniors from Epsom, Walton Heath, Burhill, Tyrrells Wood and Surbition Golf Clubs heading out for the 36 hole event and it was great to see golfers from an impressive 1-20 handicap all playing together. The morning round was a team competition and it was won by our very our junior team made up of Joe Filbin, Ben Partridge and Patrick Murray. They won the morning round by a clear '16' shots proving that local knowledge is key when playing at Epsom. Well played boys. The afternoon stableford was won by Surbiton's Olly Taylor, carding an impressive 42 points with our own Ben Partridge in runners up spot with 39. It was a great day and I would like to thank all the helpers led by the Captain for the smooth running of the day, not least 'Sean the Chef' for providing the delicious and slowly becoming world famous 'Epsom Burgers' for dinner.
Golf Course
After one or two comments where passed to me about the slow pace of the greens, I had a meeting with our Head Green Keeper and this week he and his team have been working hard to get some pace back in the greens. He has been out double cutting and rolling the greens this week and I was out yesterday and they are now a lovely pace and also a lovely surface to put on so you should notice marked improvement.
Coming Up
We have a very special event coming up in the diary, on Saturday, 22 August we are holding 'The Nick Browne Memorial Golf Day. Nick was a very special member; he was a great supporter of the club, especially the junior section, he put up trophies, sponsored the junior team in the Pro-Am and could always be found in his favourite spot in the 19th hole. The format of the day is teams of four playing the 'sixes' format, tee times from midday and golf is followed by one of Sean's gourmet BBQ (£10) and we have also laid on a live band so we can toast Nick long into the evening. Guests are more than welcome for both the golf and the evening entertainment, members £10 and guests £25 (BBQ £10 extra). Proceeds are going towards purchasing a bench to commemorate Nick. So if you would like to play please see the signup sheet on the men's competition board or click here to get in touch for more details.
