E. Sperring & Giffard Cup
The men headed out on Sunday in very wet and windy conditions, it started off dry but then as predicted the heavens opened mid-morning which led to a few drowned golfers heading in for an early bath. However, impressively most of the field battled through the elements competing in the E. Sperring (20 handicap and under) and Giffard Cup (21 handicap and above). This week's wet weather specialist and winner of the Giffard Cup was Richard Egan with a very impressive 41 points earning him a two shot cut to his handicap and I predict he may now go much lower, great round Rich. The E. Sperring Trophy was won this year by one of our most 'experienced' golfers at the club, this man knows every inch of the golf course and is rumoured to have not lost a ball since 1979. So I was very happy to announce, Past Captain, Past President and Epsom legend Mr John Chard as the winner with a fantastic 42 points. In those conditions they were two great rounds gentleman. Only one small negative from Sunday was the amount of drop-outs we had in the morning, I'm afraid looking at the weather forecast and calling the pro shop at 7.15am isn't acceptable I'm afraid. We don't ever mind juggling things around but you must realise that this can occasionally leave your fellow members without a game. You know who you are, so if you need to drop out of a competition please give us in the pro shop at least 24 hours notice. Thank you... moan over!
Helen Walsh Cup
Now of course I would never leave out the ladies, so this week's ladies event was the Helen Walsh Cup and despite the Saturday ladies having the pick of the weather, the winner emerged from Tuesday's blustery conditions. Our very own Lady Captain, Diana Balsdon carded a nett 69 to take the cup. A lovely round of golf, it must be those new Yonex irons (available at very competitive prices in the pro shop).
Junior Passport Programme
Also on Sunday we had a lovely presentation to seven of our up and coming superstars, all these seven youngsters have gone through all of the stages of our 'Junior Passport Programme' and as a reward as well as their certificates, Epsom Golf Club have kindly given them all a free year's junior membership. This is a great thing that the club is doing to encourage youngsters through the club and let's hope there's a future Club Champion amongst them.
Coaching August Offer
For the month of August I would like to offer you all a special programme that will incorporate all the facilities and all aspects of the game. The programme will include:
- Three 30 minute lessons, including a video session, an indoor simulator session and a short game session.
- An eight hole playing lesson, working on course management, decision making and transfer of techniques from the previous three sessions.
- A gapping session on the indoor simulator as it is so important to realise the distance you are hitting your individual clubs.
The programme will cost just £149 and must be booked within the month of August. If you are interested in finding out more please click here to get in touch.
Finally, 'I need a man', well not me personally of course but I do need one or two chaps for this Saturday afternoon's Mixed Vice President's Trophy. So if you would like to escort one of our lovely lady members around the course, please click here to let me know and I will come back to you with a start time.
New blue tee markers
Some of the more observant of you may have noticed some additional blue tee markers on our closest six holes to the clubhouse. These have been set up for our new breed of youngsters to play throughout the summer. However, I have already had several requests from many of our senior section to use them but sorry chaps you have to be under 4ft 6" I'm afraid.
The Big Summer Sale rolls on, still with many, many bargains to be had. So come down to the pro shop this weekend to see what you can find!
