Men's Captains Day 2015
This Sunday has seen some amazing golf and not just played up at St Andrews. Nearly 90 people turned out to play in this year's Men's Captain's Day, hosted by Tony Filbin and what a day the Captain put on. From complimentary gifts in the pro shop to a fully stocked half-way house which was very well received by the members. As I said there was some amazing golf played, with the Captain's own son Joe Filbin carding a superb 43 points, normally good enough to take the spoils. However, one of the best rounds in the club's history had just been completed by one of the Club's most colourful characters, Mr Hector Gauld carded a gross 65, equalling the club's course record, to lift the Captain's Cleek. Now it always makes me a little nervous when Hector steps up to make a winning speech but it was a great one, thanking his playing partners and the Captain for providing alcohol all around the golf course. Well done Hector on an outstanding round... The legend lives on!
We also made a little presentation of an EGC shirt signed by all the members at the Captain's Day to my departing Head Assistant Dave Bright. Dave has been a great representative for the club and a good pal too, he will be missed but I know that all at the club wish him well in his new role down in Bristol.
Ladies President's Prize
On Tuesday the ladies had their President's Prize Day, with David Barrows providing not only the prize table but also a token gift of a personalised golf ball on arrival. This couldn't top the bucks fizz reception that David Bright laid on for the ladies prior to their game, a lovely parting gift for the ladies that he has worked with for a number of years now. David Barrows had all the bases covered on the course, with four nearest the pins and two nearest the pin in twos. A wonderful day was capped off by lunch, and the overall winner by some way was Eunice Smith with 43 points! Well done to Eunice and well done to David Barrows on providing the ladies with a wonderful day.
Course work
If you have played on the course on Thursday you will see that the greens have been top-dressed, this is essential work that is carried out three or four times a year and ensures that we maintain the smooth surfaces for you to putt on. After the greens are dressed the greenkeepers then go round and brush the sand into the greens, before letting the watering systems do their bit to wash the sand into the greens. However looking at the forecast for Friday, it may be a case that they get a really good watering!
