Every year I enter a sweep competition with some friends and it's all about picking players that are going to perform well in the majors, on Wednesday of this week I received my panicked phone call from my friend asking for my picks. We have to pick a European, an American, a player from the rest of the world and a player that was 100/1 or more that week. My picks for this week were Spieth, Stenson, Day and Goosen. However, I should have gone and 'Dustined' off my crystal ball and I could have replaced young Retief with our very own Tommy Fleetwood! The lad may look like a gap year student, but boy did he play well yesterday! Let's hope he can keep it going as I read a tweet last night that said if he wins, he's off to party with Robert Allenby! Don't forget that the golf will be on all the time in the club house, especially the final day on Sunday, should be a great finish!
Ladies Club Championships
In our own major competitions we had the Ladies Club Championship last week, played over Friday and Saturday. The weather treated them well and the ladies that did play had a really good weekend. Of course, it's not all about the taking part, there is the small matter of some major silverware to be picked up!
After day one there wasn't a lot to choose on either front (handicap and gross) with anyone shooting within four or five shots of the leaders still in with a chance for the following day. Eunice Smith and Linda Murphy both broke par on Friday and Jean Kenny's 89 left her the only lady to break 90.
The Saturday scores were much the same, leaving the competition very close, except for the handicap competition, where Linda Murphy again came up trumps with another sub 70 round and was crowned the Sheila Marshal Trophy winner for 2015, well done Linda.
In the gross competition however, history was made (as well as a few mistakes)! Jean Kenny had followed her 89 on day one with a 93 on day two and with Sally Morton carding a 92 and a 90 it left the players tied in a dead heat for first place. This didn't stop Dave announcing to the ladies that Jean was the winner, as with the handicap system down on the day, it was left to him to try and make sense of a tied situation. However, realising the ladies were playing for the gross prize, meant that really there was no countback situation and that really it should be a playoff! Past lady captains were assembled and a ruling was asked for, however as this had never happened before, they weren't sure of what to do. The two ladies were consulted and after deciding that Pimms and Carling didn't make a good warm up for a play-off, the two ladies decided to share the honours and be joint Club Champions for 2015, well done Sally and Jean.
Pro Shop Scramble
There was no major for the gents last weekend, so we had a Pro Shop Scramble instead, well received by all that played and their guests on the day. This weekend we have the Men's Captains Prize day, with almost 90 on the start sheet to tee off Sunday morning. Good luck to all playing and goof luck to Tony for his day.
In the hall way you will now see that we have posted the list up for the Grand Match vs. Banstead, this is open to all full members of the club and will take place at Banstead in September. Following the success of the match in our own 125 year, Banstead wanted to continue this going into their own 125 celebrations. If you would like to play, please add your name to the list, all the details regarding the match are on the poster.
On the golf course there has been much talk recently about tree removal and especially the tree that was removed by the 5th green. At this time of year we look to trim the trees to make sure that they are not over grown and to keep them healthy. The tree that was removed on the 5th green was cut back and in the process it was discovered that the tree was actually dead inside and on completion of the cutting back, it was left looking very sorry for itself. So the decision was taken to remove the tree and make the area good where it had come from. Hope this tidies the matter up and please keep an eye on my emails as I'll be using them to provide you with a few more updates throughout the year.
