A great Covid Club Championships Weekend Things have been very different for us all under the new and constantly changing guidelines but we were very happy to be able to put a Club Championship weekend or all the sections of The Club and what a great weekend it was with over 330 rounds of competitive golf played over the three days. Due to the Ladies Club Championships being postponed from the Covid lockdown, a decision was taken to have the ladies play on the same weekend as the Men with their first round played on the Friday morning and their second played following the men’s round Saturday lunchtime. The ladies who couldn’t commit to 36 holes also played on Friday in an 18 hole stableford and this was won by Yvonne Barrows with 34 points. However, we had 17 ladies battling it out for the best gross and best nett over the two days and it was serial winner, Kimberly Munro, who once again picked up the gross competition. But it was our Spanish connection, Conchita Caesares who managed to just edge Kimberly out of the double by one shot in the handicap event. Some great golf ladies and huge congratulations to both. It’s great nowadays to also have our Junior section also involved on this very busy weekend at The Club. And also great to see our highest number of youngsters out there with 19 pegging it up this year. We had many parents also walking round with the players which created a lovely atmosphere for the youngsters out there late on Saturday afternoon. The best gross round was recorded by our man in The Pro Shop and Junior Club Captain, Alex McWilliam with an 83. The nett competition was won with a very, very impressive nett 64 by Ben Lakhani. The ‘Yellow tee Championships’ was won by Triston Broux and the ‘9 hole Championship’ was won by our little pocket rocket, Alfie day with a nett 33. Some brilliant golf played by our future stars with special thanks going to Roy, Roy and Roger for making a special occasion for all the Juniors.
This year the men had the biggest field I’ve experienced in my 11 years at The Club with 107 competitors heading off from early Saturday morning. With such big numbers and the fact that under guidelines we weren’t able to do a presentation on Sunday afternoon, we decided to start everyone from the 1st tee this year throughout the morning to able to get everyone out. Saturday of Club Champs golf is always a bit nervy with everyone just trying to post a half decent score so to be in the running on Sunday. However, judging by the amount of beers sold at the refreshment tent I decided to put out this year, I think a few were trying to either drown their sorrows or make something happen. So by the time all scores were in on Saturday we only had 4 scores in the red but way out in front with the round of his life was Kevin Le Provost who carded and incredibly nett 62 to lead the charge for the Rosebery Medal. In the scratch event after day one it was all to play for with Dec O’Brien leading by one from David Barnett but a few others still well in the frame.
Sunday brought a second day of breathless conditions, so the scores were there for the taking. But as they came in no one was setting it alight and then new member, Gary Manning, handed me a nett 68 and this coupled with his Saturday round of 70 put him in as Clubhouse leader on nett minus two…but would it be enough.
