Men's Guest Day
Men’s Guest Day was another great success on Sunday despite the 45minute downpour in the middle of the morning. But the Sun came roaring out again and over 70 members and their guests enjoyed the course playing beautifully and the hospitality laid on by the Pro Shop. We had some really nice comments from the guests about how much they’d enjoyed both the day and the course, especially the ones who hadn’t played for a while. A couple even took membership forms and details away with them.
The format was pairs betterball and there were some cracking scores with Joe O’Connor and his guest Tome Bates coming in runners up spot with 44 points but it was Chris Blackman and his guest Billy Watts who topped the pile with an impressive 45 points. |
|
It’s now a tradition to give away a ‘Pathway Membership’ to one of the guests and it was The Captain's partner, Mark Devine who was the lucky name pulled out so we look forward to seeing a lot more of him at the Club over the next three months and beyond hopefully. All in all, another great day here at the Club. |
A game of fine margins
The ladies this week also paired up in their Betterball competition and it was the winning pairing of Angie Stevenson and Janye Ayres with an impressive 41 points who narrowly beat Sue Pickard and Frances Collomosse into runners up spot with 40 points. Some great golf ladies.

Another good week for our Ben
Ben headed down to Burnham-on-Sea GC, to compete in the West of England Championships this week. On a tough golf course, he played very well to card 71, 70 and 71 to finish -1 in total which earned him a superb runners up spot in this very prestigious event. Congratulations Ben. With Ben having a very busy playing schedule this season with have enrolled another young man to help out in the Pro Shop when Ben is playing. So, Bailey joins us from Walton Heath GC where he holds an equally impressive one handicap, he’s a great lad who is there to help in any way he can.

A message from EGC own QuizMaster, David Hylton
As some of you may know, a Quiz Night Fund was created in May 2015, when the entry fee to the quiz was increased by an inflation-busting doubling of the fee from £1 to £2 per person. As well as maintaining the winning teams’ “donations” to the Captains’ charities, the increase has been squirrelled away to buy something that in these difficult times, was a “nice to have” that the club could not sensibly prioritise above “must-have” expenditure. We are now in touching distance of buying a 125-piece crockery set, of a white design with the club logo on each piece in burgundy. It would be good if we can reach our target as soon as possible, so, are you a potential quizzer, who can add value to a current (probably pretty miserable ) team’s performance or who can you set up your own team. With the very flexible “team size” of 4, currently varying between 3 and 8, the only issue would be that it would be very helpful to me if I was aware before each quiz night if you were planning on bringing extra ‘ringers’. 18 teams of 5 or more might be a tad crowded in the lounge. We have a capacity for about 100 people in the lounge, 19th and Presidents’ Room. We have a brilliant average of between 65 and 70 attendees per quiz at the moment. Once purchased, the fund would continue, probably to pay for breakages. The next quiz is on Monday, 9 September, Entry is £2 per person. The pre-order (email to me by 5:00pm Thursday, 5 September) food menu, is; - Lasagne, garlic bread and salad - Scampi, peas and chips - Vegetarian Quiche and salad All at £6.95 and available from 6.30pm. The first question is around 8:00pm. I hope to see you there David Hylton The QuizMaster

A chance to play for a beautiful pair of trophies, it’s a Mixed Betterball Stableford Pairs competition and the pairs will be ‘drawn’ from the lists the week before. The tee times will be from 10:00am so head to either the Ladies or Men’s Competitions Board to sign up. £10 per pair entry.

Pro Shop 'Cross Country' competition Friday, 30 August
The numbers are a little low for this event so please either add your names or let us know in The Pro Shop as I will have to make a call on Monday as to whether the event will run or not.
Although some of you may already play the course this way unintentionally, we have devised a nine-hole ‘Cross Country’ course around the Downs. For example, the 1st tee to second green Par 5 and the mighty 16th tee to 18th Green Par 6. The map of the course is on the Men’s Competition Board or below if you would like to see the other holes. It’s a Fourball Texas Scramble event and we have laid on a lovely Curry with all the trimmings after play.
Golf, food and prizes; £50 per team and open to ALL members (inc Flexi)

England vs Rest of The World Sunday, 1 September
This is your chance to step forward and represent your country, whichever one it may be? Captained by Past Captain, Adrian ‘The Foreigner’ Northeast and the ever-patriotic Richard ‘St George’ Halifax, this is an individual stableford but every point will count for your side as the highest average is the winner. Last year I believe it came down to a quarter of a point. This is open to All Full and Flexi members, £5 entry for individual prizes (and a qualifier for Men’s Club Champs).

Men’s Club Championships Saturday, 7 & Sunday, 8 September
This is the BIG one for all you Full male members out there but please remember you must have played in at least FIVE qualifying events since January, 1 to be able to enter. We still have plenty of events to play in if you need a couple more and if you’re not sure either check on your ‘HowDidiDo’ account or simply contact the Pro Shop and we’ll tell you. We have The Brookes Cup (scratch) and The Roseberry Medal (Handicap) to be defended by last year’s Champions Hector Gauld and Mark Bennett, respectively. This is one of the best weekends we host at the club so even if you are not playing, why not come up for the presentation held on the 18th Green and enjoy the unique atmosphere that we have at our events here at Epsom?
The entry sheet is on the Men’s Competitions Board; £12 per man for both days. |
EGC Men’s Seniors Open Thursday, 12 September
This event is growing more and more popular every year as our members now realise that they are able to play in it. We have golfers coming from far and wide with last year’s winner coming from Crowborough Beacon GC down in Sussex. He is down to defend his title again but if you would like to keep the crown here in Epsom, let us know in the Pro Shop as soon as possible as the start sheet is filling up fast. Outside golfers are charged £35 entry but members only pay £30, with this including coffee and bacon rolls on arrival, golf followed by a two-course carvery and presentation of prizes. Look forward to hearing from you, open to ALL male members.
|
EGC Mixed Open Saturday, 14 September
Again, as with the Seniors event, popularity has grown since we have publicised that EGC members are very welcome to play in our Mixed Open with a guest. It’s a great day and the format is Betterball Stableford followed by a luxury cold meet buffet and presentation of prizes. To outside pairings, the cost is £65 but to an EGC pairing the cost is just £60 per pair. You can either head to the ‘Play’ dropdown on our website or directly email the Pro Shop with your pairs.
|
So, as I say, we have plenty for you and your guests to play in over the next few weeks and if you require any further information or would like us to enter you in any or all of the above events, please contact the Pro Shop and we will help.

On the course, strutting down the high-street or enjoying a well-deserved holiday; no matter what we’re doing we want to know that the sunglasses we’re wearing look great. If we can find a pair that looks the part in all of the above scenarios then even better... |
| Oakley Mercenary sunglasses |
|
Performance, versatility and style are a must and if you hadn’t guessed already, Oakley bring those three elements to the table with their Mercenary Prizm shades. For the course, Prizm lens technology comes to the fore to enhance colour contrasts so we can spy any course undulations with ease - especially useful on the greens. |
However, the versatility of these shades is the main USP. Its modern styling allows for a look that fits any surroundings with ease, whilst the impressive UV protection means the Mercenary is ready to tackle any beach holiday! We've got a wide range of Oakley sunglasses available to order via our Click & Collect website, so click on the button below to explore the range. |
