Another win for Spencer
If it’s not Gerrard Harrington, it’s Gareth Spencer ticking off the victories with a couple under his belt already this season. Sunday’s comp was the Stredwick Cup, a difficult Par/Bogey format. Some good scores returned with Alan Cottam in fourth with +2, Roger Wildig third also with +2, Big Steve Moore in runners up spot with + 3 but out in front was Gareth Spencer with a cracking +5. He duly filled up the Cup as is now tradition and earned himself a handicap cut to 17. |
|
I must also make a special mention to Flexible member Paul Balch who returned a great +4 earning him a healthy handicap reduction. Please remember all you Flexible members can play in all these competitions for handicap purposes just as Paul did.
The ladies this week competed in The Collette Salver and it was lovely to see some new members up there fighting for the top spot with Jane Ayres in runners up position with 37 points. But it was the 40 points by Rianda Markham on Saturday that took the winning salver and handicap cut to 19.
Again, another special mention because I’m just putting up the Ladies Eclectic standing up and I see that Margret Laverty is currently two shots clear of the field, so great golf Margret and let’s hope you can keep them all at bay for the rest of the Finally, just a reminder after an earlier email in the year, The Men’s Club Championships is on the weekend of Saturday, 7 and Sunday, 8 September. It was originally dated last year the weekend before by The Comps and Handicaps Committee moved it back a week as it had crept into July and a number of members were still on holiday. The Sign-up sheet will go up in a couple of weeks so make sure you’ve all played your five qualifying rounds.

Another satisfied customer down at Callaway
On Wednesday I took another member down to Callaway Performance Custom Fitting Centre in Chessington. Dave ended up ordering a lovely new set of the Apex 19 irons and gained a club in distance. He also fell in love with the NEW Epic Flash driver which is on its way to him. If you would like to book a session for either irons/hybrids or fairways/Driver, please drop into the Pro Shop and we can get you booked in. I currently have one spot on Thursday, 18 July at 6:00pm available but others are bookable online. |
|
| Time to get your wedges ‘Gapped’ | Possibly one of the most important areas of the game is the approach play and knowing your distances is an absolute must.

|
| TaylorMade offers in-store | Now is a great time to come and try the NEW TaylorMade M5 and M6 range because you get a FREE Milled Grind wedge when your purchase a set of irons. How good does it feel when you strike the ball right out of the sweet spot? Pretty special, right? As much as we'd all love to, striking the centre of the clubface on every shot isn't realistic, which is why opting for some irons with added MOI could make all the difference. |
What is MOI? An iron’s actual sweet spot is no bigger than a pinhead, with anything struck outside resulting in the clubhead beginning to twist at impact – this is what is commonly referred to as MOI. The higher a club's MOI, the more stable it is through impact and therefore more resistant to twisting. So... Higher MOI = More forgiving |
The secret to better strikes So, here's the secret to getting that special feeling more often with your irons: - Coaching – Yep, let’s take some time to assess your swing to ensure you're giving yourself the best chance of success
- Try out Callaway’s Big Bertha irons – A suspended weight deep in the clubhead helps with stability and MOI, increasing our chances of finding the sweet spot
Let’s start getting a little extra forgiveness back in your game with a fun-filled custom fitting session with your local PGA professional – that’s us!
