A fabulous weekend
This weekend just gone was one of the busiest weekends of the year at the Club as we held the Men’s Club Supper, the AGM, the Garrett Cup and the NEW Captain’s Drive-in. We kicked off on Friday night with the Men’s Club Supper with all the chaps turning out in their finest Black-Tie outfits. We were lucky enough to also host the Men’s Captains from our neighbouring Clubs Banstead Downs, Tyrrells Wood, Cuddington and The R.A.C. A fine dinner was followed by super speeches from our Captain, Vice-Captain as well as a response by the guests from John the Cuddington Captain. The Captain was then carried into the Lounge Bar in the traditional way and the evening then went on into the wee small hours, another great night.
|
The next day for me brought our traditional final Captain and Pro match against the Vice-Captain, Steve Brown and President, Sid French. It was a cracking game and we were up all the way and thought we were going to end Alan’s year with a victory. However, two drained 20ft putts on the 17th and 18th greens from the President put pay to that and the match finished in a gentlemanly halve.
This then took us nicely up to the AGM, which by previous years was pretty uncontroversial. Which then just left the final item that is to vote in the NEW Ladies and Men’s Captains. So, up stepped our NEW Captains, Jenny Jeffcoat and Steve Brown, both of course unanimously voted in to rapturous applause to receive their broach for Jenny and Red jacket for Steve.
|
Both gave lovely emotional speeches and introduced their chosen Charities, I know that we all wish them all the very best for their coming year. They both also introduced their NEW Vice Captains, Julie Trafford and Neil Roberts. |
Sunday morning then brought the Garrett Cup, one of ‘The Majors’ with over 80 in the field but I’ll come back to the result of that a little later on. So the form on this Sunday is once everyone is in from the competition we all head out for ‘The Drive-In.
This of course is started with the outgoing Captain putting out on the 18th hole and then passing the ball across to the NEW Captain, who then tees it up and drives it up the 18th fairway.
I could see that they were all a bit nervous but up stepped the NEW Junior Captain, Oscar Emmett and of course launched a stinger up the fairway, this was matched by the Lady Captain with a very elegant looking swing and then finally the Men’s Captain stepped up and completed the set with a cracker up the middle. Success all round! |
|
Now that the NEW Captains were now officially in office their first duty was the presentation back in a packed-out clubhouse.
The first trophy to be presented was the day’s event, the Garrett Cup and what a tightly run contest it was with Adam Crockford, Lee Alderman, Gareth Spencer and Ian Dewar all into the countback on nett 69. However, it was Gareth Spencer with the best back nine who took the beautiful cup.
Well played Gareth. |
|
We then presented the biggest trophy in the cabinet, the Men’s Winter League. This was a hard fought battle throughout the winter months in all sorts of testing conditions but the duo at the top of the pile at the end of the series was the pairing of Cameron Morris and Past Captain, David Tarbet or ‘The WLC’ as he now likes to be known.
Some great golf over ten rounds chaps to take the biggest supported event of the year. I do have to give a special mention to Tom Williams Senior and Junior who pushed them all the way and I know their year will come.
|
|
And finally, it was the turn of the Victor Ladorium winner. The Victor Ladorium is a very impressive trophy to win as it’s decided by how well you do in every competition so there shows the player who can put in good scores week in, week out.
This year I was very happy to announce Howard Jones as winner and a very popular winner he was too. Great year Howard. |
|
One other mention from Sunday was for Mr Graham Shine who didn’t have a bad day really as he first picked up the trophy for the pair who beat me and the Captain by the most (the less said about that the better). But to top it off his number was pulled out of the bucket to win the Pro Shop prize draw and collecting a set of custom fit TaylorMade irons! Not a bad day Graham eh…..

What's coming up?
I hope you haven’t forgotten that a week on Sunday is Mother’s Day, so if you haven’t already booked in somewhere to spoil your Mum, why not enjoy a lovely Sunday Carvery here at the Club. Enjoy a two-course carvery with a complimentary glass of fizz for Mum for just £19.00 per head. (under 12’s just £12.00) Booking is essential so please call Tina in the office to book.
And finally just reminding you of the next Quiz Night, Monday, 8 April (signup sheet on the Entertainments Board) reminds me of a new ‘semi-official’ Club Rule that was announce by our NEW Lady Captain last Sunday, which unfortunately caught out our quiz master Mr Hylton on Monday night.
I think we can all safely say we had enough of the ‘B’ word at the moment and are more than happy to leave it in the ‘safe’ hands of our politicians (sorry very hard to type whilst laughing) so it has been decreed that anyone who mentions the word ‘BREXIT’ within the Clubhouse walls has to put a pound in one of the Captains Charity boxes. I think this rule would have unanimously been vote through at The AGM. Good luck and no extensions!

With the return of more golf-friendly weather and the Masters just around the corner, the season is edging ever closer to getting underway. So, with that in mind, let us ask you a question: What are you doing differently to ensure 2019 is a better year on the course than 2018 was? |
We want you to challenge us Our team has years of experience in helping golfers improve their games, from custom fitting golfers into the best driver for their game to helping them escape the sand first-time, every time.
