Winter Programme
I sent out a standalone email detailing some of the work that is going on around the course at the moment as part of the 2018/19 Winter Programme but for those who haven’t had a chance to read it, i’ve listed the hole-by-hole guide below;
2nd Hole: We have cleared out a great deal of scrub, holly bushes and hawthorns from the left side of the hole. This has been done with the view to try and help speeding up play and the remaining stumps will be removed when we hire the digger in February.
4th Hole: The big Hawthorne bush has been removed from between the two tee boxes as this was ugly, overgrown and gathered rubbish. The Yew Tree that we hit over has been cut back and tidied up to improve the ascetic view from off the tee.
7th Hole: The copse at the dog-leg of the hole has been cut back and shaped for a couple of reasons. Firstly, to give the chance of finding a ball a little quicker and secondly to improve the ascetics and line of the hole. The whole copse was getting tangled with ivy and needed to be cut back.
Further up the hole the on the left side, the two small Hawthorne bushes have been removed but before you yell that we are making the hole too easy, we have plans to grow in the long Rye grass rough and re-shape that area of the fairway.
8th Hole: You will see that the winter mat has been re-positioned to the rear of the tee box which makes for a far better line off the tee than before. Three trees, one of them dead, have been removed from the right-hand side just off the tee. These trees over the last few years have been encroaching on the golfing line of the hole and needed to be removed otherwise after another growing season the line from the tee would have been almost invisible. Again the fairway re-shaping programme will affect the approach to the 8th green, making driving the green more difficult. Craig will also be clearing more of the scrub along the right hand side when we have the digger in February.
11th Hole: The area to the rear of the green is being cleared to allow for much better air movement across the green. The Hawthorne bush that was covered completely in ivy at the back left of the green has also been taken to allow the poor area in front of it to recover. When we have the digger, this area will be levelled out and seeded to allow Rye grass to grow. The rough will be grown in around this green over time punishing more a loose shot.
The work we are doing is essential work to help with air movement and therefore improve the quality of our putting surfaces, improve the ascetics of the course and help with the growing issue of speed of play. I know some of you may think that we shouldn’t take out trees but we cannot simply leave nature to encroach further and further on to the golf course. I have in my update mentioned the ‘Fairway re-shaping programme’ and I will give you a more detailed report on this when we start to undertake it just before the growing season. If you would like to discuss any of the points above, please email me here or drop into the Pro Shop and I will be happy to run through the Course Committees thoughts for the future of our course.

Simply sensational
In this week’s Men’s Winter League Rnd 7 we saw some sensational golf played, the format was BetterBall Medal which does throw up some good ones but I don’t think even the winners expected this score. I have to give the runners up, Lewis Ede and Disco Del, a mention because their score of nett 57 would probably be more than good enough to win on a normal day. However, on Sunday they came up against the Father/Son pairing of The Williams’ in sensational form, Tom and Tom returned a superb 53 to take the spoils. Well played chaps.
We also had one other shot well worth of a mention, a little half wedge on the 17th Hole from Past Captain, Declan O’Brien resulted in Hole-in-One, number three I believe for Dec. Congratulations and thank you for the half a lager.

The ladies this week played in their Texas Scramble Medal and it was the Saturday Ladies Team of Ladies Captain Julie Burgess, Claire Morris and Rianda Markham to take the victory, narrowly beating Shirley Kennett, Conchita and Sue Becksmith into runners up spot.
It’s now that I have to hold my hands up for a bit of a Pro Shop blunder last week. I announced Helen Davies, Denah Shah and Sue Becksmith as the winners but unfortunately due to a temporarily mislaid card this wasn’t actually the case. The team of Jean Roberts, Rianda Markham and Claire Morris actually won with 101 point. My sincere apologies to all ladies concerned, so if you see me with a black eye next time at the Club, you’ll know why. Apologies ladies.

Callaway Performance Centre booking
Yet another three members this week have taken advantage of a special relationship with Callaway, they’re thinking of giving us our own parking space as we are slowly turning The Callaway Performance Centre into our own personal facility.
Callaway aren’t launching their NEW Epic Flash and Apex Iron and Hybrid range until Friday, 1 February, however they are now fitting for them. So, if you fancy a bit of the latest kit please let me know and we will book you in and either myself or Adam will come down there with you to enhance your ‘Callaway Experience’. |

Coming soon: Callaway Epic Flash This time two years ago, we were sitting here in fascination as Callaway introduced Jailbreak Technology for the very first time. Safe to say that the Epic driver was exactly that - epic - and produced major distance gains for the majority of golfers who were custom fitted for one.
Fast forward to now and Callaway is bringing Epic Flash to market, which they say has a 'radically different face design' that will promote faster ball speeds and, in turn, greater distance.

The last thing anyone wants is to purchase a new set of irons, only to struggle massively when they take to the course with their friends a few days later. Sound familiar? Well, with lots of new products about to land in-store for 2019, here are a few iron models that we recommend having a custom fitting for... |
The M5 and M6 irons from TaylorMade are designed for explosive distance, thanks mainly to the innovative Speed Bridge structure that helps stiffen the clubhead to generate higher ball speeds - visible technology that you can see in the images above. The M6 is designed for maximum forgiveness - something that we can all benefit from - whereas the M5 is suited to the better player who is looking for more distance without sacrificing control.
Hopefully, you have an idea of which iron you'd like to put in your bag, but it's not until you come and visit us for an enjoyable custom fitting that you'll know which iron and shaft combination performs best for you. We're here to help you play better golf. |
