Competition news

Winter League

This week we were kind on the men with a ‘betterball stableford’ format for the halfway round of the Men’s Winter League Series, this format always throws up some big scores and this week didn’t fail to disappoint with the top two going to countback both with a massive 46 points.

However, it was the pairing of two brand new members the pro shop had put together, Steve Moore and Gareth Spencer who pipped runners up Bill Allison and Andy Harris to the victory. Great to see the new members up there collecting the prizes.

The overall standings at the halfway point is incredibly tight at the top with Richard Foot and Lee Alderman out in front by just one point ahead of Williams Snr and Jnr.

However, there are the pairings of Jones and Burton, O’Brien and Parker and Harrington and Bennett hot on their heels, it looks like it could be a close run going into the New Year.

Christmas Greensomes and Lunch

The ladies this week held their annual Christmas 13 hole Greensomes and Lunch, with the golf being won by the pairing of Carole Watson and Shirley Kennett. I hear, as it was Adam's turn for a lunch, that Shirley made a lovely heart-warming acceptance speech rounded off by a couple of jokes that would have made Jim Davidson look like Mother Teresa, only gutted I wasn’t in the room to hear it! I did pop my head in once, it looked a great atmosphere with all the ladies having a fantastic time. They partied on into the evening.

Seniors Lunch

I was very pleased to be again invited to the Seniors Lunch and again it was lovely to see a packed dining room, full of festive spirit. The Seniors Captain, Alan Rhodes said some very nice words about the Club and his fellow seniors before presenting all their major trophies.

It was wonderful to see Epsom legend Ken Robinson present the trophy that he had recently put. A big thanks to Alan and all the seniors for a lovely lunch and a couple of glasses of vino.

Shop news

Yonex demo kit in-store this Christmas

After the success of last week’s Yonex Fitting Day I have been fortunate enough to persuade my Yonex rep to leave all of the contents of the Yonex fitting truck here in the Pro Shop from December, 18 till January, 5. This means all ladies and men’s drivers, fairways, hybrids, irons and wedges will be available to try either in the Swing Studio or on the golf course.

At any point you can book in for a session with one of us to have fitting or trial. I have a number already booked in but always room for more, as opportunities like this don’t come up that often. Call us on 01372 741 867 or click here to book your session.

Christmas Vouchers

A number of members or member’s families and friends have been in to purchase either vouchers for a golf lesson package or simply vouchers for the Pro Shop. Others have also done it over the phone with the gift going straight in the post immediately, this we can still do but get in before the Christmas post runs out.

If you are struggling for Christmas ideas why not pick up a Pro Shop voucher for either golf lesson packages or for spend in the Shop.

I hope you will all agree that despite some very trying conditions our course has been in great condition this year again under the leadership of our Head Greenkeeper, Craig Russell and his staff Miroslav and Nick.

Dates for the diary

Santa's Grotto and Christmas Carols - Thursday, 20 December

This one always see’s the Clubhouse packed to the rafters so get you names down quick. We have Santa’s Grotto from 5.30pm – 7:00pm (adults to provide small gift for children) and also food is available in this time. Scampi or Chicken Goujons and chips for the adults at £8.00 and Fish Fingers or Nuggets and chips for the kids at £5.00.

We then have the very talented Judith Sitford on keyboard to accompany the carol singing with all welcome to join in. Finally, mince pies and mulled wine will top of a great evening, if that doesn’t get you in the festive spirit, I don’t know what will. Head to the entrance hall for more information and adding names to the list (guests very welcome).

Boxing Day Shotgun Stableford - Wednesday, 26 December at 8:00am

If you would like to work off some of the excesses from Christmas Day, for the first time in many years we are running a stableford competition on Boxing Day. The shotgun will begin at 8:00am so you can get yourselves back for lunch. Also, if you have golfing guests with you over Christmas you are able to bring one guest along to play. Entry is £5 per golfer and open to ALL including Flexi Members. Head to the Men’s Competition Board to enter.

Do you spot a trend?

We all want to enjoy playing golf, and a big part of this is lowering our handicap. Yes, there will be times when your game isn't up to scratch and you go up .1 a few times in a row, but there'll also be times when all of the puzzle pieces fit and your handicap tumbles.

What does your graph look like?

As the year comes to an end, it's important to take stock and examine where you can improve your game going into the new year. There might be several areas that you want/need to work on, or maybe just two or three finer details that will take your game to the next level.

Whatever those areas are, we're here to help. We can identify the key reasons you're not shooting the scores you want, as well as devise a personalised winter coaching plan to help iron out those faults and get you paying your best golf. So, if you want to see your handicap tumble in 2019, come down to the shop for a chat - you've got nothing to lose and everything to gain.
