Another great Championships at Epsom
As I had mentioned in previous newsletters, the weekend just gone was the pinnacle of the Men’s golfing calendar in the form of their Club Championships. We had the biggest field we had for quite some time with 94 men pegging it up on a beautiful Saturday morning.
There was the odd nervy quick swing but reports came back that everyone got off ok and on time. The course had returned to a lovely condition after the red-hot summer and the Green staff had managed to get some pace back into the greens and I’d like to at this point thank Craig, Miroslav and Joe who all pulled some extra hours last week to get the course looking tip top.
Who were going to be the overnight leaders and could they be caught on Sunday? So, bidding for the Rosebery Medal in the handicap competition Gary Debrou was the overnight leader with a very impressive nett 67 but hot on his heels were Lee Alderman and Mark Bennett both on 69. Playing for the Brookes Cup, the scratch competition, defending champion David Barnett held a narrow one-shot lead over Luke Jackson on 74 and 75 respectively but there were plenty others still in the mix. |
We were very lucky to have two stunning days as we woke up on Sunday to clear blue skies and off they went once more. I can certainly say that over the last couple of years, under our new Head Greenkeeper, our course is playing a lot more difficult. Through shaping fairways and creating lush and defined approaches and surrounds of greens, you have to be far more accurate nowadays or you must rely up an all-round sharper short game. Aa you may have worked out by now, the scores over the weekend weren’t that low, with only four golfers going under their handicap all weekend. But this weekend is only about beating the field, not the course. Lee Alderman took the nett clubhouse lead early on with a 142 total and as they kept coming through he was holding on but then finally Mark Bennett returned an identical 73 to match Lee’s 142 total, so to a countback! Back 18 the same, so then it went to back nine to decide that Mark Bennett was the Rosebery Medal Champion. Very well played to both Gents but I guess it must have been Marks brand new TaylorMade 790’s that made the difference (sorry Mark couldn’t resist the plug). |

A very popular winner who has worked hard at his game this year, so big congratulations to him for a great couple of rounds.
So, back to the Scratch event, unfortunately Luke couldn’t push David on Sunday but the jungle drums were beating around the course that Hector Gauld was having a storming Secord round, level par through 15 we were hearing. Unfortunately, Hector dropped a couple coming in so after two rounds it was all tied up at the top between Mr Barnett and Mr Gauld, so off to the playoff holes they went. Of course, Hector had to throw back a quick couple of beers first to get him in the zone. They both played the first and the 17th beautifully with pars either side. The 18th was not quite to the standard we’d expect from either of them but nerves can do funny things but they halved in sixes so it was off to the 1st once more but sudden death this time. David blistered an iron up the middle, however Hector slightly pulled his tee shot to hit the tree left of the fairway. It bounced out but he was left with a four iron into the green and what a four iron he hit, a wonderful strike to 10 feet! Could David react to that, he certainly did by knocking a short iron into what turned out to be 11feet. David to putt first and he narrowly left it on the low side which left Hector a tricky right to lefter for the Championships. Bang, in it went to take the title for his second time. I’d like to thank both gents for such an exciting playoff and I’m sure they both have more to come. A fantastic final round from Hector to put him up there and a great Champion to boot.

Once again, The Men’s Club Championship always throws up a great atmosphere (the envy of other clubs), excitement and enjoyment for all involved. I’d likes to thank my boys in the Pro Shop and all the staff of the Club for helping to create such special weekend. Also, a special congratulation to NEW member John O’Brien who won the Pro Shop Prize draw, bagging himself a set of Custom Fitted TaylorMade irons…..all for just a tenner!

Now that we’re moving into autumn, you need to start thinking about layering over your snazzy polo shirt with a stylish sweater that doesn't become too restrictive when you swing. We've got a great range of sweaters in-store, including some club crested pieces, too. |
| Enter Glenmuir. Their garments are expertly crafted to give you the very best quality out on the course. Not only that, they also do club cresting, meaning you can wear the club's badge with pride the next time you tee it up in competitions or travel on away days.
