On The Course...
On Sunday we had a brand new event to commemorate that wonderful day when St. George slayed the dragon, however on this particular day all the slaying was done by the ladies of Epsom Golf Club. The format was the ever popular 'Sixes' competition which means best two scores from holes 1 - 6, best three from 7 - 12 and all score from 13-18. It did leave many scratching heads trying to work out what was a good score and what was in affect par for the day, it's 108 for future reference. So with that in mind I think you'll be blown away by the winning score of the team of Helen Davies, Conquita Caseares, Jean Roberts and the lady on form, Denah Shah. They amassed a total of 124 points! That's a whopping 16-under-par… very, very well played ladies and come on chaps pull your socks up.
I always say that it's always a good thing if you can embarrass a member of staff in front of a busy Sunday presentation, and what better way than to pull up our own Alex Inns up on his 21st birthday and have the entire lounge sing him Happy Birthday!
On the competition front I want to finally mention another fantastic win in the ladies section, Shirley Kennett last week transferred out of the academy section in to the full ladies section as she had managed to get her three cards in for her 30 handicap which qualified her to play in this Tuesday's 'High Hopes and handicaps' ladies competition… and she only went and won it! Now am I saying it's to do with the couple of lessons we've had in the last week or so maybe? Lesson packages available on request! A victory and a handicap reduction in your first competition… where do you go from there? Well played Shirley.
Summer Knock-out Competitions
The draws are now up for The Bessel Edwards, The Brodie Helder and The Everrett Cup Knockout competitons. Please head to the relevant boards and then contact the pair or individual you have been drawn to play. After a couple of issues last year we are now very, very strict on games being played in time, sorry no excuses!
The Peter Hedger And Murray Akehurst Memorial Charity Golf Day - Friday, 19 May
The list is up on the men's noticeboard so get your names down for a great day's golf and a chance to raise a glass to two real characters that are sadly no longer with us. You can enter in your four balls, as individuals or even with guests and the day costs £30, you will be very well feed and watered whilst also contributing to Cancer research UK. Should be a great day!
The Derby Is Coming
Now the Derby rolling into town has mixed feeling for me, yes it's a great spectacle which certainly puts Epsom on the map, and yes we do host a fantastic Derby Day Banquet at the club (details below) and yes I do get a bit of time off. However, the downsides are always the disruption to you the member and the potential damage all those race-goers cause to the course just when we get it looking superb. So before I give you the itinerary of closures, I'd like to first inform you of how I can make this period better golfing-wise. Over time we have established quite a number of reciprocal deals with other golf clubs near and far for just such an occasion. Firstly, we have the Surrey Hills Golf Club Alliance which enables you to play either North Downs GC, Redhill and Reigate GC, Reigate Heath GC or Chipstead GC for £15. Secondly we are also part of The Smart Golfer Network which offers FREE golf at one of 32 courses. Now some of them you may have to travel a bit for, but some are relatively close so please click here to find out more. Finally, in our 125th Anniversary Year we have established a reciprocal arrangement with Littlehampton GC, a lovely golf course down on the South Coast and well worth a day out.
To book any of these golf courses, you can of course go direct (except Littlehampton that has to be booked through me), but please feel free to pop into the shop and we can arrange the booking for you.

Derby Day Event - Saturday, 3 June
This has traditionally been a fantastic day out, our own Derby Day held at Epsom Golf Club in the comfy and relaxing surroundings of our own clubhouse, overlooking our wonderful golf course. Order of the day from 12.00pm is as follows:
- Bubbly on arrival.
- Lovely buffet.
- Afternoon tea.
All of this for an amazing £35. Look out for the sign-up sheets and enjoy a fab day of 'fillies, fun and frolics'.
After my daily meeting with your Head Greenkeeper Craig, he has asked me to put out to you a few bits of information. Firstly, he wanted to explain about some of the weeds on the golf course. A issue we have is rain or the complete lack of it. We have now not had any substantial rain for seven weeks which apart from leaving the golf course rock hard, more importantly has not given us the opportunity to spray for weed or leather jackets. The leather jackets are the beetles that lay the lava which the crows peck the fairways and greens to find. The problem we have is that once you spray the product we must have at least a half an inch of rain over the following 48 hours to wash it in, otherwise it scorched the ground. So please all work on your 'rain-dances'!
Craig also informs me that the 'Ground Under Repair' at the rear of the 8th and 9th greens are now back in play, so please now play your ball as it lies. Finally, 'Winter Rules' will no longer be in play as of Monday, 1 May, I will also have notices up around the club to make all aware.
Summer's Here... Honestly?
Now, despite the fact that I was scraping ice off my windscreen this morning and the fact that some the men's roll-up this morning looked like they were off to an antarctic expedition, its May next week and therefore definitely summer! So pop into the shop and have a look at all the new summer ranges Under Armour, Glenmuir and many more. We also have a wide range of spikeless summer shoes from Under Armour and FootJoy.
