Well I made it back from skiing in one piece, we were incredibly lucky with the conditions, great snow, blue skies and good vino! However, it does look like I brought the sub-zero temperatures back from France with me.
So this weekend we are looking at 'The Big Thaw' which is not great for the golf course and therefore will need some protection. These decisions are not taken lightly, but we must consider that even before the snow arrived we had an inch of rain; we then had a few inches of snow which then melted and froze. So there is a lot of water in the ground and we just don't know how deep the frost goes. We are due some rain tonight and temperatures tomorrow to create a big thaw, with more rain due over the weekend this will create a very soft surface and this is when the damage to our course and greens occur. So after a meeting with the Green staff and the Chairman of Greens there may be a distinct chance of a trolley ban over the weekend and beyond. Please keep an eye on your inboxes as I will update you as soon as a decision has been reached.
On the Course...
This week's Men's Winter League was won, right at the death, by Howard Jones and Adam Stapley which raises them up the second spot in the overall Winter League standings. The top spot is still being held by the formidable pair of Big Stan Arnott and Ray Williams.
In the Ladies Competition this week was the always popular Texas Scramble with a big field heading out into the minus temperatures. I was happy to be in my nice warm pro shop that day. The winners this week were the team of Linda Bacon, Val Tarsh and Eunice Smith with a score of 61.4, who narrowly beat runners-up Carol Uhl, Yvonne Barrows and Pat Foot who carded a very commendable 62.2. Well played ladies and hats off for bouncing the ball round.
