Pro Shop Mother's Day Pairs
Although it was a couple of weeks ago I must let you know about some amazing golf played by a couple of your new lady members. The competition was the Pro Shop Mother's Day pairs, with an early shotgun start at 8.15am. The format was a pairs better ball which always produces some cracking scores. 44 or 45 points is normally a winning score but on this day there must have been something in the water as I was handed, not just one but TWO cards with an astonishing 50 points! At this point I must give my sympathies to father and son team of David and Mike Lower who quite rightly handed me an amazing card expecting a fine victory, only to be pipped on the countback by the pairing of Geraldine Scanlon and Deena Shah. Now not to take anything away from Deena who played very nicely we hear, but Geraldine had the round of her life scoring 47 points! Earning her a handicap cut of a massive six shots taking her down to 30, well played ladies and well played the Lowers!
Monthly Medal
Sunday just gone saw over 80 people head out in the Monthly Medal all bidding for the Division tankards, for the first time in as long as I can remember the standard scratch for the day was returned at which suggests some testing conditions. This month's division winners were:
Division One - Bill Allison - nett 68.
Division Two - Mark Bennett - nett 67.
Division Three - David Jones - nett 68.
I must also give a special to the Division Two winner Mark Bennett, who manged to just out play Richard Halifax in the Final of the Alexander Rosebowl. Great day Mark!
Also a little mention must go out to one of Saturday's group called the 'Merkins', Dave Taylor who plays off a very respectable nine handicap managed to get all the planets to align and complete the round of his life carding a staggering gross 65, that's an unheard of nett 56! Amazing round Dave must have been a few Merkins in there.
Club results
Epsom managed again to bring home the bacon in the week at Chipstead in the round robin Surrey Hills Golf Club Alliance Event. This comprises of a accumulative stableford team event played at each venue, North Downs, Redhill and Reigate, Chipstead, Reigate Heath and here and I am very pleased to say that our boys came out top over the series and bring the shield back where it belongs. Well played to the team of Bill Allison, John Chard, Mark Bennett, Roy Chegwin, Alan Bradbrook, Don McCulloch, Charlie Loftus and last minute super sub Tom Hanley. Well played gents!
1st tee progress report
As you can now see this week we have finally been able to get cracking with the path to complete the 1st tee extensions works. Unfortunately, due to the very wet weather the whole project is a month behind schedule, this is simply because the plant machinery needed to dig out the path was not able get down into the dip, or it could get down but never get out. You will now see the boys finishing off the path and tidying up the surrounding areas ready for seeding. Thank you for your patience, but not even I can control the weather! We will have it open as soon as possible but the grass still needs a bit of temperature to really bed in on the tee, but I hope you all agree it will now make a great start to our course.
Health and Well Being
A new section I have introduced as I am always try look after the health of our members and with this in mind I have booked in a FREE taster Pilates class here at the club. So many studies have recommended Pilates to golfers as it looks after and develops core strength as well as flexibility and balance all so essential to the golf swing. I certainly will be attending and depending on the level of interest I will hopefully look to make this a regular class. This first session is on Thursday, 31 March from 11.30am - 12.30pm, to book please get your names down on the sign-up sheet on the entertainment's board. If you cannot make the daytime session and would prefer and evening session, please contact me and I will try and organise something depending again on the level of interest. All mats will be provided, just comfy clothes and a willing to learn is required.
