Competition news

Founders Weekend and Hickory Challenge

After the idea in our 125th Anniversary year to increase this event over the weekend, it has gone from strength to strength with last weekend as no exception. Despite some challenging conditions just over 80 golfers headed out, some dressed up, some didn't but they all had to use some of my Hickory Clubs throughout they're round. Longest drive on the 5th, nearest the pin on the 17th and finally holing out with what I can only describe as a cheese knife on a stick on the 18th. Just a little taste of the clubs I had to play an entire round with and as you can see by the picture, also dressed suitably. It's great fun to adjust the swing accordingly; however chipping, putting and distance control is a challenge to say the least. So the competition rules are, I post a gross score with my Hickorys and them everybody tries to beat it with merely a ¾ handicap reduction. I managed an 83 which I wasn't too upset with, could have been a bit better but anything around 80 I'm pretty happy with. So anyone that beat (not equaled…..sorry Mrs Lady Vice Captain) my score received a share of the prize pot. Below you will see a list of the 32 from 85 golfers who managed to sneak past me, with a special mention to a very dapperly dressed Cameron Morris who recorded the best nett score over the weekend with a great 67.

The list is as follows: Yvonne Barrows, Cameron Morris, Clair Morris, Conquita Casares, Declan O'Brien, Jean Kenny, Christine Newby, Pat Foot, Sean Laverty, Phil Collomosse, Joe Kenny, David Barrows, Ray Williams, Alan Bradbrook, Ray Burton, Pat Inns, Terry Eden, Trevor Cowley, Martin Harris, Bill Allison, John Rice, Chris Wood, Mark Bennett, Steve Parsons, Gary Debrou, Dave Taylor, Paul Hague, Phil Baker, Dave Burrell, John Cresswell, John Phillips and Gerry Dunn.

Nearest the Pin on 17th hole with a Hickory club: Saturday - Christine Newby and on Sunday - Neil Roberts.

Longest drive on 5th hole with a Hickory club: Saturday - Declan O'Brien and on Sunday - Martin Harris.

Quiz NightThis year's Founders Day weekend was also complimented by a dinner and quiz on Saturday night with over 90 in attendance. The dinner was, as always, up to Sean's fine standards with the finest Haggis starter I have ever tasted. So with the wine flowing David Hylton stepped up to deliver one of his now legendary quizzes, a very funny evening ensued with only a little controversy, table 10 you know who you are! We had singing, golf ball dropping and even the Chairman standing up on a chair! A great evening and a great weekend with special thanks to our President David Barrows, who has been the driving force behind the weekend.

Course news

1st tee update

CourseYou have probably seen a lot of greenkeeper activity around the extended 1st tee over the past few weeks after what had appeared to be a finished project. Unfortunately what we discovered in the area where the tee has been extended to was possibly the only lump of clay we have on the entire golf course. Thankfully, in a strange way, we experienced as much rain as I have seen on the course and what this exposed was a flooding issue due to the clay in the new area of the tee. So it was decided to raise some of the turfs and install extra drainage to alleviate the problem for the future, we may not have that much rain to deal with again but we wanted to be sure. The remainder of the work, the final clearance of shrub the other side and the new path, has had to be put back slightly because again the rain has made the slopes unsafe for the machinery. The area is drying out nicely and work will begin again as soon as possible.

A little bit of a request/moan really to keep our course looking good

With the greens unusually soft for Epsom, even the lowest of approach shots are creating pitch marks on the greens. Please, please if you hit a shot good enough to create one, please repair yours and then repair another. This way we maintain the putting surfaces that Epsom have become famous for. I have just ordered a job lot of complimentary pitch forks that will sat at the door of the pro shop, so please help yourself and please use them. While I'm having a bit of a moan, playing on Saturday I must have replaced 30 divots, again the ground is soft and it is very easy at the moment to take a divot, so please put them back!

However, on the whole I thought the course was looking great despite the weather AND the traffic we have experienced over the last month or so. Trolleys are still fine out there with the wind drying the course out nicely but please if you think it may be a little damp, check the homepage of the website before you set off. If there is a decision to be made the website will be updated by 8am on the day.
